Prostatic Artery Embolization
If you’re dealing with an enlarged prostate, we can help relieve symptoms with prostatic artery embolization, a minimally invasive treatment.
At UCI Health, interventional radiologists perform prostatic artery embolization (PAE) to treat symptoms of BPH such as urinary urgency.
Our approach to PAE
Typically, BPH affects about one in four men by age 55 and half of men by age 75. Although it’s non-cancerous, it can still cause uncomfortable symptoms and interfere with quality of life.
PAE works by reducing blood flow to the prostate gland. By blocking specific arteries that supply the prostate, clinicians cause the glad to shrink over time. This may help relieve urinary symptoms.
How to work with us
If you’ve been diagnosed with BPH, your urologist may refer you to our UCI Health Interventional Radiology program if:
- Your BPH medication isn’t working
- You experience urinary symptoms like waking up multiple times a night or going frequently throughout the day
- You need to urinate hourly or urination is painful
- You are either ineligible or not interested in traditional surgery
If you are a candidate for PAE, one of our interventional radiologists may evaluate you with a:
- Urine test
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test
- MRI or ultrasound of the prostate gland
What is PAE and how does it work?
During PAE, an interventional radiologist inserts a small catheter in the wrist or groin.
Using image guidance, the catheter is directed to the arteries that supply blood to the prostate.
Tiny particles are released to reduce blood flow to the prostate. Over time, the gland shrinks and symptoms improve within a few weeks to a few months.
How long does PAE last?
Prostate artery embolization is a long-term solution for a common problem that arises as men age. Usually, the results last a minimum of three to four years but often longer, sometimes up to 10 years.
What is the recovery time for PAE?
Most patients go home the same day and can return to light activities within 24 hours.
What are the risks of PAE?
PAE carries a lower risk of urinary incontinence and sexual side effects than other traditional surgical options.
What are the benefits of PAE?
PAE offers several benefits, including:
- Shorter recovery time with no hospitalization required
- Lowered risk of sexual side effects
- Lowered risk of urinary incontinence
- Decreased discomfort
What to expect with PAE
You’ll consult with your clinician before scheduling the PAE procedure.
They’ll discuss any medications you take or any medications you’ll need to take before the procedure. They may advise healthy eating, exercise and minimal or no alcohol in the weeks leading up to the PAE procedure.
What happens after PAE?
After PAE, drink several glasses of water to flush the dye from your system. There is little pain after the procedure though the catheter insertion site may be sore or tender.Your doctor may advise you to take prescription antibiotics and pain medications for about a week. They’ll also tell you how to keep the puncture site dry, when to change your bandages and when you can resume normal activities.
